Rep. McCollum joins Christian leaders for a virtual briefing

On April 26, 2022, Rep. Betty McCollum joined Christian leaders of denominations and organizations for a virtual briefing on the importance of supporting H.R. 2590, the Palestinian Children and Families Act. The bill, which Rep. McCollum introduced the bill in April 2021, would prohibit Israeli authorities from using U.S. funding to detain and torture Palestinian children, demolish Palestinian homes and seize Palestinian property, and further annex the occupied West Bank.

The event was organized by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), which co-leads the No Way to Treat a Child campaign, Churches for Middle East Peace, and the Faith Forum on Middle East Policy. During the briefing, they shared a letter signed by more than 20 Christian faith leaders in support of H.R. 2590.

The event was moderated by Peter Makari from the United Church of Christ/Christian Church Disciples of Christ. The speakers included Rev. Riz Prakasim, New Life Presbyterian Church, Roseville, MN; Rev. Doug Mitchell, Retired Associate Pastor, Westminster Presbyterian, Minneapolis; Bishop Regina Hassanally, Bishop Southeastern Minnesota Synod, ELCA; Rev. Alex Awad, Retired United Methodist Missionary; and Susan Gunn, Director, Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns, in addition to Rep. McCollum.
